Review of the LEOPOLDINUM recording under the direction of Ernst Kovacic
Review of the LEOPOLDINUM recording under the direction of Ernst Kovacic
(Ernst Krenek - Symphonic Elegy - Capriccio 5033)
in the March/April 2010 FANFARE MAGAZINE
prestigious music publication in the United States of America

[…] Whatever his method-of the-moment, he always wrote beautifully for strings […] Krenek wrote Symphonic Elegy "in memoriam Anton Webern." It is an indication of Krenek's mastery that this moving tribute is a twelve-tone work no more difficult to hear than Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen - I did not recognize it as 12-tone at first hearing. The marking is Allegro, but there are several sections in various tempos, including a Mahlerian funeral march. The stunning work is aided by a gorgeous performance. The Leopoldinum is a Wroklaw (Poland) chamber orchestra; it's hard to believe that the 16 string players shown in a photo can produce such silky surfaces and lush, deep tone. The 2007/08 recorded sound is also ideal. […] Sinfonietta a Brasileira was written in Rio de Janeiro but does not use native folk sources. […] Virtually every work has something to say, be it serious or ironic, and every piece is masterly crafted. […] This disc is a marvelous addition to his recorded legacy and should bring him many new admirers.

LEO FESTIVAL CONTINUES ...25.05.-2.06.2010

The second LEO FESTIVAL continues to evolve our founding vision: we want do demonstrate that the LEOPOLDINUM orchestra is engaged in diverse local communities of the city and its region, connects different areas of life and activity, reflects rich history, and creates collaborative links essential for common future.
Last year we have opened the program with a puppet opera and dance. This year the program starts with the ARCHITECTURE AND MUSIC performance conceived as a bridge to Wroclaw's very numerous, diverse and vibrant student community. Connections between Music and Architecture are historically well established. We will explore them, implicit and explicit, from Bach to Xenakis, Scelsi and Glass.
The MUSIC AND PRAYER program is dedicated to those Jewish and Christian composers who suffered various forms of political persecution and oppression.
Hans Krása's opera BRUNDABÁR, especially known from later adaptation for children of the Nazi concentration camp in Czech Terezin, will continue our work with and for the children.
The program of HARMONIES DU SOIR will feature the most charming string works from the core repertoire of LEOPOLDINUM orchestra.  We will also proudly present the Apollon Musagete Quartett from Vienna, a strongly emerging young string ensemble of Polish-born musicians.
I wish our audiences the most enjoyable and invigorating experience.
I also want to express our deep gratitude to all sponsors and individuals who made this second LEO FESTIVAL possible and successful.

SYMPHONIC ELEGY

ERNST KRENEK – SYMPHONIC ELEGY

The review of the above recording will be published in the February issue of THE STRAD magazine, in Great Britain.  Performed by LEOPOLDINUM under the direction of Ernst Kovacic, this CD is published by the Capriccio label.  THE STRAD is a well known and nicely illustrated magazine to string players, teachers, instruments’ makers, conductors and others.  The name comes  from Stradivarius.

This recording of Ernst Krenek’s works is quite popular among internet music forums, including reviews.  But, at the same time, this is already second review in such a prestigious and proessional magazine – first was published in the DIAPASON in France – November 2009.

„ […] new festival is being born.  In one of the most magical regions of Europe, 2010 will bear witness to the first annual, 12-day circulation of energy between composers, performers, scientists and audiences. […]  The Arcana Festival takes a clear position against clichéd prejudices according to which it is difficult to reach audiences with contemporary music. […]“
